Japan Exports YoY
Exports of high technology products have been the engine of Japan's economic growth since 1960. Exports account for around 19 percent of total GDP. In 2019 exports fell 5.6 percent from the previous year's record high amid global trade tensions. Main exports were: transport equipment (24 percent of total exports), with motor vehicles accounting for 16 percent; machinery (20 percent) on the back of power generating machine and semicon machinery; electrical machinery (17 percent), such as semiconductors, IC and electrical apparatus; chemicals (11 percent), mainly plastic materials and organic chemicals; and manufactured goods (11 percent), such as iron and steel products, nonferrous metals and manufactures of metals. Japan's main export partners were the US (20 percent), China (19 percent), the EU (12 percent) in particular Germany (3 percent), South Korea (7 percent), Taiwan (6 percent), Hong Kong (5 percent), and Thailand (4 percent).

Exports from Japan rose by 4.3% yoy to JPY 8,824.3 billion in March 2023, above market forecasts of 2.6% and after a 6.5% growth in January. This was the 25th straight month of growth in sales but the softest pace since a fall in February 2021, amid rising cost pressures. Sales of transport equipment climbed 23.0%, led by motor vehicles (38.3%), while those of machinery gained 1.1%, driven by semicon machinery (7.4%). Also, exports of others went up 2.5%, and sales of manufactured goods rose 1.1%. By contrast, sales of electrical machinery fell 4.5%, weighed down by electrical apparatus (-8.4%). In addition, sales of chemicals shrank 3.2%, amid falls in plastics (-14.6%). Sales went up to the US (9.4%), Hong Kong (6.9%), Singapore (2.7%), Australia (18.2%), Germany (0.9%), and the EU (5.1%). In contrast, exports fell to China (-7.7%), Taiwan (-1.8%), South Korea (-0.8%), Philippines (-14.9%), and Russia (-17.1%).

Exports from Japan rose by 6.5% yoy in February 2023, compared with market forecasts of 7.1% and after a 3.5% growth in January, to JPY 7,654.7 billion. This was the 24th straight month of growth in sales but the softest pace since a fall in February 2021, amid rising cost pressures. Sales of transport equipment climbed 16.1%, led by motor vehicles (23.5%), while those of machinery gained 1.4%, driven by power-generating machines (2.4%). Also, exports of others jumped 20.0%, and sales of manufactured goods were up 3%. By contrast, sales of electrical machinery fell 1.7%, weighed down by electrical apparatus (-2.9%). In addition, sales of chemicals shrank 2.1%, amid falls in plastics (-12.1%) and organic chemicals (-5.3%). Sales went up to the US (14.9%), Hong Kong (7.8%), Singapore (10.5%), Australia (16.6%), Germany (8.7%), and the EU (18.6%). In contrast, exports fell to China (-10.9%), South Korea (-4.7%), and Russia (-58.2%).
