Kuwait Raises Key Interest Rate by 50bps
The Central Bank of Kuwait raised its key discount rate by 50bps to 4 percent on January 25th 2023, pushing borrowing costs to the highest since 2008. The central bank Governor said the decision takes into account recent developments in domestic and international economic conditions, banking indicators and movements on KWD interest rate in the local market considering the changes to the interest rates on the other major currencies. Policymakers also said the move aims to reinforce the financial and monetary stability of the banking and financial units, and maintain the attractiveness of the national currency as a lucrative and reliable store for domestic savings. The dinar is linked to a basket of currencies which includes the US dollar.

Kuwait Hikes Rates by 25bps
The Central Bank of Kuwait raised its key discount rate by 25 bps to 3.00 percent on September 21, 2022, bringing borrowing costs to the highest since September 2019. Adjustments were also made to the various money market intervention rates. Kuwait has not and will likely not keep pace with US Fed hikes because the dinar is linked to a basket of currencies and not only the US dollar.

The Central Bank of Kuwait raised its key discount rate by 25 bps to 2.75 percent on August 10th 2022, bringing borrowing costs to the highest since February 2020 and narrowing rate differentials with the US. On July 27th, the Central Bank of Kuwait increased the discount rate by 25 bps to 2.5%, after the US Federal Reserve's three-fourths of a percentage point rate hike. The country links its dinar to a basket of currencies that includes the dollar.
