Mexico is the second largest economy in Latin America. The country has an export-oriented economy: more than 90 percent of trade is under free trade agreements. In Mexico, services account for 62 percent of total GDP. The biggest segments within services are: wholesale and retail trade (16 percent); real estate (10 percent); transport, warehousing and communications (7 percent) and financial services and insurance (6 percent). Industry constitutes 18 percent of output and the largest segments within this sector are: automobile industry (4 percent of total GDP) and food industry (3.8 percent). The remaining share is divided by: construction, water, gas and electricity distribution (8 percent), mining (5 percent), government (4 percent ) and agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting (3 percent).

Mexico Economic Growth Revised Up to 1.8% in Q1
Mexico’s gross domestic product expanded 1.8 percent from a year earlier in the first quarter of 2022, accelerating from a 1.1 percent increase in the previous period and above preliminary estimates of 1.6 percent. Manufacturing activity grew the most (3.1 percent vs. 1.7 percent in Q4), while output rose faster for services (0.9 percent vs. 0.3 percent). On the other hand, the primary sector experienced a sharp slowdown (1.9 percent vs. 4.6 percent). On a quarterly basis, the Mexican economy rose by 1.0 percent, following a flat reading in the previous quarter.

Mexico’s gross domestic product expanded 1.1 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2021, easing from a 4.5 percent increase in the previous period but above preliminary estimates of 1.0%. Primary activities grew the most (4.7 percent vs 0.7 percent in Q3) while output eased for both industrial activities (1.7 percent vs 5.0 percent) and services (0.2 percent vs 4.2 percent). For the full 2021, the Mexican economy grew by 4.8 percent, partially recovering from an 8.2 percent contraction in 2020.

Mexico Economy Grows Less than Expected in Q4
Mexico’s gross domestic product expanded 1 percent year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2021, following a 4.5 percent increase in the previous quarter and missing market expectations of a 1.3 percent increase. The industrial sector grew the most at 4.8 percent, followed by the services sector at 1.6 percent. In the meantime, the services sector grew at a much softer 0.1 percent, according to preliminary estimates. For the full 2021, preliminary estimates indicate the Mexican economy grew by 5 percent, partially recovering from a 8.5 percent contraction in 2020.
