UK Car Production Down in September
UK car production fell 6% to 63,125 units in September 2022 from a year ago following four months of consecutive growth, as output was again restricted by severe supply chain issues affecting manufacturers, as well as high energy costs and component shortages. The latest figure was also down by 47.7% from the 12,729 units built in the same month in pre-Covid 2019. This September, exports declined -7.4% to 48,956 units, driven by reductions in shipments to the EU, US and China, although exports increased to South Korea, Australia and Turkey. The number of cars built for the UK market, meanwhile, also fell slightly, down -0.9% to 14,169 units. Despite the overall decline, UK production of battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicles continued its recent upward trajectory, with combined net 9.9% growth to a record share of 37.8%.

UK Car Production Up for Fourth Straight Month
UK car production jumped 34% to 49,901 units in August 2022 from a year ago, gaining for the fourth straight month, although that compared to a weak period last year and volumes remained significantly lower from pre-pandemic levels. Production for the UK market surged 33.1% in YoY in August to 10,709 units,while the number of cars built for export gained 34.2% to 39,192 units. Battery electric, plug-in hybrid and hybrid vehicle production also grew, accounting for about a third of all cars made in the UK in August. Meanwhile, SMMT flagged staggering energy costs as the single biggest concern among British car manufacturers. There is also significant concern about the future, with 38% worried about business growth, 42% about their international competitiveness and 49% about their ability to recruit staff as companies strive to transition their workforces to zero emission technologies and processes.
