The number of payrolled employees in the United Kingdom decreased 136 thousand, or 0.5% to 29.8 million in April 2023, following an upwardly revised 42 thousand advance in the previous month. It also marked the first decline in total payrolled employees since February 2021. Year-on-year, payrolled employment increased 297 thousand, driven by the rise in the health and social work sector (+154 thousand). Across regions, annual growth in payrolled employees rose the most in Luton (3.5%) and was the lowest in Westminster (1.2%).
